WRITE-1: The Portfolio

A body of creative and critical work

What is the Portfolio?

Candidates are encouraged to write in a range of forms during the first year of the course, and submit drafts to the constructive scrutiny of their peers in the weekly critical workshop. They are also encouraged to reflect on their practice and to record the ways in which they’ve taken influence from their reading. This work comprises Section A of the Portfolio.
In the second year, they produce one longer piece of creative work in a specialist form, along with a critical commentary on their practice and influences. This comprises Sections B and C of the Portfolio. Central to the whole process is the giving and receiving of constructive criticism in a regular critical workshop across the two years of the course.

WRITE-1 PORTFOLIO comprises 60% of the AFA in Creative Writing.

It has three sections:

Section A: Exploration

Candidates submit short examples of creative writing in three different forms, and a short commentary on their work

Section B: Specialism

Candidates submit an additional, longer piece of creative writing in just one of the three forms they explored for Section A

Section C: Critical Commentary

Candidates comment on the influences and editorial process behind their work in Section B
